The planes fly from Lands End Airport which is 8 miles away, just past St Just, where the weather is proven to cause more cancellations to helicopter flights than from Penzance.
Their previous flights using ancient helicopters from Penzance were discontinued, but The IOS Steamship Company objected legally to a new helicopter service in every way possible, despite the widespread abhorrence of their self interested and widely derided shenanigans by visitors, residents, companies and local institutions. The delay which this bought, allowed them to get their new helicopters in the air first and further extend their dominance....until the new competition triumphed in getting permissions.
If you found people deciding not to fly on their helicopters, you would often learn that it was on a matter of principle.
The new helicopter service from Penzance flying again to both Tresco and St Marys will commence in Spring 2020 flying up to 17 return flights per day, but would have been much earlier without the despicable actions of The Isles Of Scilly Steamship Company.
